  11. This read-me file contains information about system requirements
  12. and installation instructions.

  14. Before you install Netscape 6, be sure to read the Release Notes,

  30.     To view and use the new streamlined "Modern" theme, your 
  31.     display monitor should be set to display thousands of
  32.     colors. For users who cannot set their displays to use more
  33.     than 256 colors, Netscape recommends using the "Classic"
  34.     theme for Netscape 6.
  35.     
  36.     To select the Classic theme after you have installed 
  37.     Netscape 6:
  38.     1. Open the Edit menu and choose Preferences.
  39.     2. Under the Appearance category, choose Themes.
  40.     3. Click to select the Classic theme.
  41.     4. Click the Apply Classic button, then click OK.

  77. For Mac OS and Windows users, it is strongly recommended that you
  78. exit all programs before running the setup program. Also, you
  79. should temporarily disable virus-detection software.

  81. Install into a clean (new) directory. Installing on top of released
  82. product builds may cause problems.

  84. *Installation Instructions -- Windows
  85.     
  86.     Note: For Windows 2000 and Windows NT systems, you must have
  87.     Administrator privileges to install Netscape 6. If you see 
  88.     an "Error 5" message during installation, log on with 
  89.     Administrator privileges and try installing again.

  91.     1. If you are installing from the CD: 
  92.     - Double-click the Windows directory on the Netscape 6
  93.     CD to open it, if you haven't done so already. 
  94.     
  95.     If you are downloading from the Netscape site:
  96.     - Click the N6Setup.exe link to download it to your 
  97.     machine.

  99.     2. Double-click the N6Setup program icon on your machine
  100.     to begin the Setup program.
  101.     
  102.     3. Follow the on-screen instructions in the Setup program.
  103.     The program starts automatically the first time.

  105. *Installation Instructions -- Mac OS

  107.     1. If you are installing from the CD:
  108.     - Skip to step 3 now.

  110.     If you are downloading from the Netscape site:
  111.     - Click the Netscape6Installer.sea.bin link to download it
  112.     to your machine. 
  113.     
  114.     By default, the download file (compressed, in .bin format) 
  115.     is downloaded to your desktop.
  116.     
  117.     If the downloaded file does not expand automatically, you 
  118.     must expand the file using a program such as StuffIt Expander.
  119.     If you don't have StuffIt Expander, you can get a copy by
  120.     visiting:

  124.     2. Double-click the Netscape6Installer folder.

  126.     3. Double-click the Netscape 6 Installer icon.

  134.     - Change to the Linux directory on the CD: cd linux. Then skip to 
  135.     step 3.

  137.     If you are downloading from the Netscape site:
  138.     - Download the netscape-i686-pc-linux-gnu-installer.tar.gz archive.

  140.     2. Type the following to gunzip and untar the archive: 
  141.     tar -zxvf netscape-i686-pc-linux-gnu-installer.tar.gz
  142.     
  143.     3. Run the Netscape 6 Installer with the run script:
  144.     ./netscape-installer
  145.     
  146.     4. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation
  147.     process.

  149.     5. To start Netscape, change to the directory where you installed it
  150.     and run the program: ./netscape
